The Asia New Zealand Foundation has been commissioning this survey for over two decades. This year’s survey makes for sobering reading. We learned last year that eight out of 10 New Zealanders thought Asia was important to New Zealand – but two-thirds of us said we knew little or nothing about Asia.
"We thought this might just be a matter of self-confidence – but this year’s data tells us this simply isn’t the case. If anything, we are overstating what we know about Asia. What worries us at the Foundation is that young people have particularly low knowledge of Asia.
This is all suggests that we have our work cut out if we are looking to raise ‘global citizens’ – and, importantly for business, an Asia-capable workforce", says Simon Draper, Executive Director, Asia NZ Foundation.
