Suzannah Jessep joined the Asia New Zealand Foundation in March 2018, after serving as New Zealand’s Deputy High Commissioner to India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Deputy Ambassador to Nepal and, prior to that, as New Zealand’s Deputy High Commissioner to Vanuatu. During her thirteen years in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, she also served in the Ministry’s Australia, Pacific, Environment and Europe Divisions, and worked in the area of security policy.
Suzannah is passionate about Asia, and in particular building New Zealand’s connections with the fast-growing and dynamic South Asia.
Lead Negotiator, Trade and Economic Group, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade
Since 2001, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Barney has worked on a wide range of issues, from trade negotiations to climate change and international law. Previous appointments include postings to the New Zealand embassies in Tehran and Geneva, and Ambassador to Egypt in 2014-2018 (where he was also non-resident Ambassador to Algeria, Lebanon, Libya, and Tunisia, and New Zealand Representative to Palestine).
Barney is currently a Lead Negotiator in the MFAT’s Trade and Economic Group, responsible for New Zealand’s trade negotiations with China, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the Pacific Alliance (Mexico, Peru, Colombia and Chile).
